San Jose, CA – The Supernova Foundation invites community college and university students to apply for “Modesta’s Spirit & Courage Scholarship Fund.” On August of 2012, a very special woman left to the heavens above. At the age of 47, Modesta Longoria passed away after a valiant battle with breast cancer. During her last weeks with us physically, many of us will never forget her telling us that although her body was tired, she herself – was not. This was a testament of her strong spirit and courageous journey with this unfortunate disease. Modesta’s ability to keep faith and hope alive was an inspiration that provided strength, support, and love to so many.
In Modesta’s honor, a scholarship was established that is available to students who demonstrate a commitment towards raising awareness about cancer within the Latinx and underrepresented communities. It is our wish that through this scholarship, communities will be able to share in the spirit and courage of Modesta for many years.
To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled (at least part time) in a junior college or university in Northern California and working towards an Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree. Applicants must have a minimum 2.8 GPA. We are seeking applicants of a Latino background and/or students who demonstrate a commitment to Latino communities.
Applications are reviewed, shared and scored by the Supernova Board of Directors. The privacy and integrity of applicants will be honored. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,000.
